There are two reasons why I am very pleased to be able to give this key note address. The first is because the conference is jointly sponsored by HSE and the Institution and is therefore a good example of the strong liaison between the HSE and the professions. Secondly because it will deal with a subject that is becoming such an important topic for engineers in all kinds of disciplines.
However, in some ways the current significance being given to Risk Assessment and Risk Management may seem a little strange because engineers have been doing assessing and handling risk issues since the first stone was placed upon another. The person undertaking this must surely have made some evaluation of the likelihood of it falling off and its consequences.
