4. Computers in design and construction

SYNOPSIS. There can be few organisations which do not now use computers, and there is widespread interest in developing applications. This paper reviews some of the interesting applications that the author has either used or been associated with in the recent past.

INTRODUCTION

To be asked to write a short paper on Design and Construction was somewhat daunting. Eventually I wrote on the theme of computers for three reasons:

Firstly, the computer is used as a tool in the planning, design, construction and operational phases of a light rail system, and this works nicely with the papers of my two colleagues on planning and operations.
