First page of Global Service-Learning as an Avenue to Address Social Determinants of Health
Considerations for Undergraduate Nursing Education

Globalization has increased awareness of health inequities across population groups in local, national, and international contexts. At the same time, globalization has played a key role in shaping the capacity of countries to address such inequities (Brennan Ramirez et al., 2008; Forster et al., 2019), which are bound up with the social determinants of health (Labonté et al., 2011). This chapter draws attention to social determinants of health and their significance in the context of service-learning for the preparation of nurses in particular and health professionals in general. Further, a global service-learning framework, which includes interprofessional collaboration for health professions education, is explored in this chapter and elements of a proposed experiential learning initiative for nursing students are summarized.
