First page of Crouching Talents, Hidden Gifts
The Dualism of Academic Excellence and Athletic Development for Gifted African American Student-Athletes at Selective Public Research Universities

“Behind the rock in the dark probably hides a tiger, and the coiling giant root resembles a crouching dragon” is the quote by ancient Chinese poet Yu Xin that inspired the multi-million-dollar movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Highlighting the complexities of the teacher-student relationship, thematic plots in this film mirror the familiar storyline of gifted, Black student-athletes in their quest to navigate academic and athletic goals with the obligation and loyalty to the recruiting institutions that oblige them. This chapter explores recruitment, retention, and educational routing of a very talented1 basketball player for a selective, public, research university (SPRU) with Division 1A, athletic status. The player’s promise of a quality education and professional career in basketball were central to the unorthodox relationship that framed the institution’s and the player’s shared responsibility and commitment for mutual success and the player’s academic and athletic development. This is one’s player’s testimony of how he dismissed and reframed the status quo in his personal journey to success. Effective institutional structures that firmly support gifted, Black student-athletes’ academic and athletic potential as well as life after collegiate sports are also explored.
