In this chapter we describe how universities and school districts are partnering to improve outcomes for students with disabilities by developing practice-based opportunities for teacher candidates grounded in high leverage practices (HLPs). We first discuss the challenges facing teacher preparation for inclusive education and then details how practice-based opportunities provide essential skill development for teaching preservice teachers to implement HLPs. Next, we summarize two examples of mutually beneficial schooluniversity partnerships that use HLPs to organize practice-based approaches involving specific academic and behavioral practices. We conclude the chapter by sharing recommendations for teacher preparation programs and their partnering schools to develop and implement practice-based opportunities based on HLPs.
