Neoliberalism has removed any doubt regarding the nature of the state and state institutions such as its system of compulsory schools. They exist to serve dominant class interests, securing the docility of the population while increasing its economic utility. The notion perpetuated by “critical educational theorists” that schools hold benevolent potential to function in contradiction to those interests may advance many academic careers, but has proven to be pure folly.
