The “writing prompt” given to incoming credential candidates at the University of La Verne is a gatekeeper to our credential and masters programs. Seeking classical English mechanics, promising ELs, IWENs, and minority candidates repeatedly fail. Lacking additional support for these students reflects the dynamics of racism. The attempts of my university to provide such support model both racist inertia and the moral courage, will, and cost in time and resources necessary to become “anti-racist racists.”
