First page of Mr. Webb’s Zoology Class
How One Teacher Motivated and Transformed High School Students

In the Spring of 1973, I drove to Powell Slough on Utah Lake with some high school buddies to meet Mr. Webb. We were about to go bird watching, which seemed a strange and even unmanly activity. Even stranger was that we were about to meet our high school zoology teacher in the middle of a marsh in the evening of a school day. What teenagers do things with their teachers outside of school? It was the time of year when snow was gone and the earth was warming. The landscape was becoming green, a contrast with the coming brown of summer and passing gray of winter.
