Relating the story of one district’s implementation can help to illuminate the many aspects of curricular change. While some elements of any district’s implementation will be unique to the district, many of the experiences will be replicated time and time again in other implementations in other districts. Examining the story of a district’s experiences over time can reveal the changing needs of teachers and the steps one district has taken to sustain a strong implementation. An implementation story also illustrates how a district and its teachers continue to develop through different phases of the implementation. That information will hopefully prove useful to other districts that are set to embark upon a curricular change to MathScape (Education Development Center, 1998), or to a similar standards-based middle grades mathematics program.
