First page of Robotics Programs<subtitle>Inspiring Young Women In STEM</subtitle>

Robots inspire and grab the attention of young and old. Since the 1940s, when Isaac Asimov (1947) first proposed the Three Laws of Robotics, young people have dreamed about, designed and built, and competed with robots. Robotics is a frequently used outreach platform in the K-12 grades, often via exciting competitions. However, do these programs inspire young men and young women equally to enter STEM careers? Are influences different for females and males? This synthesis of educational robotics research describes programs for K-12 grades, highlighting specific differences and unique findings for females. Robotics programs can help grow spatial abilities, critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and increase interest in STEM subjects and careers for young people. Studies showed that doing robotics helps girls break through stereotype barriers and provides them an environment to explore STEM. More research is needed to better understand gender nuances in the influences from these programs, specifically, longitudinal studies plus race and ethnicity factorsin confluence with gender. However, research shows these programs have promise and are worth implementing to encourage more young women to enter the STEM fields.
