One of the most widely used frameworks for leadership development on college campuses is the five practices of exemplary leadership. This behavioral approach to leadership focuses on individual actions that can be developed with intentional practice. Empirically based, the five practices include (1) Model the way; (2) Inspire a shared vision; (3) Challenge the process; (4) Enable others to act; and (5) Encourage the heart. Each of the five exemplary practices is comprised of a multitude of individual skills and competencies. This chapter explores the history and context around the five practices of exemplary leadership, defines the model, and concludes with strengths and opportunities of the model.
