A strategic decision that must be reached in unionized work environments is what type of reward systems to use. An essential part of this decision-making process is knowing what types of reward systems are acceptable to unions and thus likely to be agreed upon in the collective bargaining agreement. To provide guidance in. this area, a framework has been developed to show the conditions under which various alternative reward strategies are likely to be acceptable to unions (see Figure 1).
