The use of GenAI tools in teaching and assessment by itself does not constitute misconduct. It becomes misconduct when it breaches the fundamental values of academic integrity: courage, fairness, trust, responsibility, honesty and respect (International Center for Academic Integrity, 2021). The challenge is that academic misconduct has always been a feature of secondary and higher education, but in this context, cheating takes on new dimensions (McKeag, 2023). The overall impact of GenAI on academic integrity has not yet been fully ascertained, and the evolving nature of GenAI makes it difficult to do a full assessment at this time. However, the uncertainty of this period does not mean that institutions can ignore the threats to academic integrity. If higher education institutions are to harness the benefits of GenAI while decreasing the impact of the challenges, there needs to be an organized response to its use. This chapter explores the responses of various groups to the possible threat to academic integrity posed by the use of GenAI.
