Abstract
This chapter explores the multiple roles research managers and administrators (RMAs) play in embedding diversity and inclusion across the research lifecycle. It highlights how responsibilities differ between strategy and lobbying, pre-award, post-award, open science and the emerging use of AI, while underlining a shared responsibility to advance research excellence through diversity. Pre-award, the FLOW model offers practical tools for integrating diversity into proposal development, ensuring that it goes beyond compliance to strengthen research quality and impact. Post-award, the framework of Cultural Intelligence provides RMAs with ways to foster trust, navigate cultural differences and build inclusive project environments. At the strategic and lobbying level, RMAs can shape institutional policies and influence funders, ensuring that underrepresented groups are not sidelined in negotiations and policy development. This chapter also addresses open science, highlighting both opportunities and risks, especially regarding data security and the protection of vulnerable identities. Finally, it considers the rapid rise of AI, stressing how responsible use requires both cultural awareness and ethical safeguards. Across all roles, this chapter argues that diversity literacy is not an optional skill but central to professional practice. By embracing diverse perspectives and building trust in science, RMAs can contribute to better research outcomes, stronger institutions and a research culture that is both inclusive and sustainable.
