Chapter Summary
This chapter focuses on spaces and places for social drinking as important third spaces. Social drinking occurs in cafes, coffee houses and shops, tea rooms and houses, bars, pubs, taverns, and soda shops. The authors consider how these spaces and places have contributed to society over millennia and explore the knowledge assets, moments, and mobilities that have made them valuable places of both work and socialization. The authors apply spatial syntax analysis to the design of coffee houses to understand how knowledge flows through these places. The authors highlight the critical role that social drinking plays in a knowledge society.
