Purpose

With the diversified development of the market economy and the deepening of the reform of the public organization employment system, temporary employment has become an important way for Chinese public organizations to obtain human resources. Auxiliary police who have been informally employed are a special group in China. So this study aims to explore the “black-box” mechanism about how career growth intervene job burnout through career commitment and career delay of gratification for Chinese informal-identity auxiliary police.

Design/methodology/approach

Valid data were collected from 456 informal-identity auxiliary police from 2 prisons located at 2 Provinces in China. Online questionnaires were distributed via email, and auxiliary police voluntarily participate in this survey.

Findings

Both career commitment and career delay of gratification partly mediate the negative relationship between career growth and job burnout.

Originality/value

Based on Weng, McElroy, and Morrow’s (2010) intra-organizational career growth theory, this study examined how career growth lower job burnout innovatively and empirically through the career commitment and career delay of gratification among Chinese informal-identity auxiliary police, thus providing some inspiration for temporary employees in public organizations to maintain a positive work enthusiasm.
