Purpose – To discuss the value of learning as the foundation of project management. Design/methodology/approach – Discusses the importance of maximizing productive time on projects, of ensuring that the project is a genuine learning experience, and of trapping the knowledge accumulated from reviews. Looks at how knowledge is built up during a project, and explores two types of information and generated two types of information generated during a project: project and process knowledge; and organizational and domain knowledge. Suggests how knowledge can be captured from a project through the post-project review and during the progress of the project. Makes the point that knowledge management does not stand still, and there needs to be in place a knowledge management policy to handle changes. Originality/value – Revisits tried and tested techniques for capturing knowledge from projects, re-emphasizing the value of learning that can be gained from projects.ISSN: 1366-6851Reference:35AG291
