Purpose – to argue that training must directly benefit the organization, improve the specific skills of the individual and create effective transferable skills for the individual. Design/methodology/approach –presents the nine steps to learning. Findings – with the concept of the“job for life” now defunct, organizations must align their choice of training with the strategic objectives of the organization and employees must take more personal responsibility for the learning they take away from training programmes, but training also needs to be identified as part of a wider system of learning. Contends that there has been a switch from the behaviourist and cognitivist models of learning towards a constructivist perspective, which is concerned predominantly with social activity, and that continuing professional development provides a distinct portfolio of advanced skills. Originality/value– believes that our academic, past-based model of learning will be expanded and advanced by present and future-based learning by doing. Reference:37AK254 ISSN: 0954-1543
