Pass it on (sharing knowledge)

Purpose – describes how trainers and learning professionals in US firms are sharing their knowledge with non-profit and community organizations. Discusses how this contributes to their organizations’ corporate social responsibility programmes. Design/methodology/approach – draws on the example, amongst others, of General Mills, a Minneapolis-based food manufacture that encourages its trainers to work with community organization in Community Leadership Forums to share good practice and learning on leadership and leadership skills; of Willie Johnson, a performance development consultant with J.B. Hunt Transport Services in Arkansas, who volunteers to serve on the board of directors of a local voluntary organization and shares his skills in customer service, conflict management and other areas; and the King’s Daughters Medical centre in Kentucky that offers course to community members as part of its role as an American Heart Association Community Training centre. Findings– reports that the links between firms and the community organizations strengthens the abilities and skills within local communities while also enabling trainers and learning professionals to gain satisfaction by giving something back to the local area. An inset describes how UPS uses a community internship program as part of it management development programme.
