Purpose – discusses how to set goals for subordinates during coaching that will fit the ways in which they think and work, arguing that this will be more effective in improving their performance than setting non-personalized goals. Design/methodology/approach – reviews the different types of goals that can be set and advises on how to use them. Also reviews the ways in which feedback on performance can be given. Findings – underlines that poor communication and inappropriate goals can reduce employee performance and suggests that taking an approach based on coaching can be more effective.
