Purpose – to examine human resource management (HRM) policies and practices in the Oman. Design/methodology/approach – provides background information on the Oman; reports on the Omanization process undertaken by the government, aimed at prioritizing Omani nationals for jobs in the public and private sectors. Features survey and research pertaining to HRD, looking at how HRD is progressing and identifying some of the challenges that it faces;explores how the social environment of the Oman is impacting on HRD policies. Describes research examining the influence of national culture and national institutions on Omani HRM in which employees from six organizations (both public and private) participated. Findings – reveals how Omani employees emphasized the influence of religion on HRM and gave high priority to Oman’s civil service laws; puts forward how they believed that labor market and Omanization programs had a significant influence on HRM policies and practices. Research limitations/implications – urges further research. Practical implications - Puts forward a number of suggestions as to how a well-structured HRD system can be established and clear strategies defined. Originality/value– provides an overview of HRM in the Oman.ISSN: 0958-5192
