Purpose – reports on how the economic downturn has made distance learning a more popular choice. Design/methodology/approach – quoting distance learning specialists and educationalists looks at the advantages of distance learning for employees and students; draws attention to how people are attracted by its low cost and ease of access. Describes how social networking is being used to supplement distance learning packages; illustrates with the example of the MBA Network. Presents the accreditation programme devised for distance learning; records the comments of those who believe that distance learning is set to grow internationally. Features the partnership formed between KPMG and the Manchester Business School to deliver online distance learning executive programmes for its employees and profiles the distance learning MBA being offered by Edinburgh Business School. Examines how new technologies are improving distance learning and are utilizing Web 2.0. Lists 40 of the top distance learning and online MBA providers; presents, among other things, brief course characteristics, number of enrolled students, international accrediting body, percentage of students who complete, exams required and online teamwork.
