Purpose – Studies the effect of integrating work experience, leadership development, and learning literatures to develop and test a model of managerial development linking experience in highly developmental assignments, learning goal orientation, and access to developmental assignments. Design/methodology/approach – Reviews the literature relating to the developmental quality of managerial assignments is presented to provide the basis for the development of the model. Reports the results of a questionnaire survey, involving 218 junior-level managers and their supervisors, recruited from the part-time MBA population at a large, unnamed mid-Atlantic US University, to gather data to test the model.Article type: Research paperISSN: 0001-4273Reference: 38AX032
