WSSPC Awards in Excellence 2001

Each year the Western States Seismic Policy Council recognizes achievement in different aspects of earthquake mitigation, preparedness, and response with its Awards in Excellence. The awards program has proven an effective method of sharing model programs throughout the western region of North America. The projects and programs that received awards in 2001 are summarized in this publication. They include a range of state‐ and locally‐based initiatives to improve awareness of earthquake risk, foster preparedness at the household level, educate school children about tsunamis, upgrade building codes to include seismic resistance, expand radio warning systems, and publicize the existence of seismic hazards in areas where residents are not aware of them.
