Construction training scheme for graduates
A new management-training scheme for graduates has been launched at the Construction Industry Training Board's National Construction College in Norfolk. The three-week residential programme is for graduates recently recruited by the Willmott Dixon company. Part of a five-week course, the graduates are given the chance to try their hand at all the core construction skills, including carpentry, floor construction and pitched-roof construction. They also learn about brickwork, concrete and building services. Trainee Alex Poole said:
This is a great chance for us to get to know about the practical tasks performed on site. So far, we have a good grasp of what is expected of us as managers, but we need to know what all the other people on site do to achieve quality and work safely.
Meanwhile, the Construction Industry Training Board has also launched an initiative to promote e-learning in the construction industry. A specially equipped car, given to the board by learndirect, is visiting construction sites across London to demonstrate the online materials available on the learndirect Web site. Construction workers will be able to brush up on key skills such as literacy and numeracy. Developing these skills will encourage them to advance their construction career by working towards national vocational qualifications which will open the door to gaining a construction-skills certification scheme card.
