WHEN A SHORT COURSE is being planned, two main considerations arise. These relate to the purpose of the course, which will be one determinant of its content, and to the likely initial qualifications of its members, which will be the other determinant. Considerations of immediate purpose and standard are not the whole story, however, for short courses can serve valuable purposes quite distinct from those uppermost in the minds of their participants.
