Project links business and educationKeywords: Higher education, Business, Innovation, Distance learning

A pilot project to link further education, higher education and business is being funded by the Department for Education and Employment's Higher Education Innovation Fund. A virtual campus with a student portal will complement the established flexible learning process. Students will be able to take advantage of online learning supported by text material, networking discussions and information exchange at seminars, with college tutors managing the process.

Involved in the initial project are Midlands-based distance-learning specialist Resource Development International (RDI), the University of Leicester, West Kent College, Swindon College, Glaxo SmithKline, Inchcape and Honda. Students from the three companies will study for the University of Leicester certificate and diploma in management, leading up to an MBA.

John Holden, RDI managing director, said: "Our role is to provide the link between the parties concerned. We are confident that this project will grow into a major education process with an increasing number of companies seeking to join the scheme."
