Subject
Space programme.
Significance
India, ranked sixth among space-faring countries, is developing a wide range of space assets. Although civilian applications still dominate government priorities, a key ancillary objective is to match Chinese efforts in leveraging space as an element of soft power in Asia.
Impacts
The government's fiscal austerity plan limits scope for a major rise in funding for the space programme.
This could set back ISRO's commercial objectives.
Nonetheless, as the programme expands European and US firms will find new opportunities for collaboration.
