Sierra Leone-China relations.

Significance

Aviation Minister Kabineh Kallon confirmed on October 5 that a proposed 318-million-dollar deal with China to build a new airport at Mamamah, near the capital Freetown, will be terminated at the end of the month. Cancelling the controversial deal was a major campaign promise of newly elected President Julius Maada Bio and the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP).

Impacts

Assistance from the IMF is likely to restart by the end of the year.

The Mamamah deal may be reviewed by the Anti-Corruption Commission and could implicate former ruling APC officials.

A review, and subsequent revision, of other infrastructure deals signed under the previous administration is possible.
