Subject
Rising tensions on the Belize-Guatemala border.
Significance
On April 21, the Guatemalan government recalled its ambassador to neighbouring Belize following an upsurge in tensions between the two countries. While these tensions are unlikely to escalate into military skirmishes, they may stymie recent moves towards greater cooperation, particularly in the areas of economics and security.
Impacts
Anger may re-ignite following the final report of the OAS investigation into the events of April 20.
Heightened tensions around the border area are likely to prevent bilateral security cooperation.
Efforts to increase bilateral economic links will be muted until relations return to normal.
