Subject
South China Sea dispute.
Significance
Tensions relating to the South China Sea grew in the last quarter of 2019, as Beijing and Washington continue to compete for primacy in the Asia-Pacific region. ASEAN and China are attempting to negotiate a Code of Conduct (CoC) for the waters, where there are conflicting territorial and jurisdictional claims involving China, Taiwan and several South-east Asian countries.
Impacts
As the United States becomes more preoccupied with domestic politics in 2020, China will seek to advance its influence in Asia.
The US Coast Guard will step up operational deployments to South-east Asia.
‘Minilateralism’ (small-scale multilateralism) among South-east Asia’s middle powers will undermine regional notions about ASEAN centrality.
