Significance
Andekaleka is the country’s largest power plant and the government has blamed the event on sabotage. This occurs as the national electricity and water utility, Jirama, faces a deeper and longer-standing crisis linked to outdated equipment, idle facilities, delayed repairs, soaring debt and issues related to government corruption.
Impacts
Government promises to expand electrification significantly by next year will flounder.
The impact on the distribution of potable water could increase disease risks.
Lasting power failures could contribute to social unrest.
