Significance
There are growing doubts about the commercial viability of the synthetic diamond sector, which has in recent years reshaped the international diamond market. LGDs have opened opportunities for new market entrants, while under-pressure corporate and sovereign legacy players have responded by entering the LGD sector or rebalancing production.
Impacts
Due to a large oversupply of LGDs on the market, a rebound in their price will not happen any time soon.
The longer-term price for high-quality natural diamonds will increase as supply falls.
The relatively immature LGD market could see further producer bankruptcies before the price rebounds.
