Significance
Preliminary official results, announced on May 9, gave President Mahamat Idriss Deby nearly 61% of the vote while his main competitor, Prime Minister Succes Masra came in second with just under 19%. The opposition has strongly contested the official figures. The final official results will today be announced by the Constitutional Council.
Impacts
Although Deby will likely include opposition figures in any new government, Masra will probably no longer be prime minister.
Rebel groups may use the election as a pretext to launch attacks against security forces.
Planned legislative polls may be delayed until next year.
