Significance
Although no reason was given, the dismissals occur amid a febrile political context, partly occasioned by tensions within Deby’s entourage over his support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s civil war as well as Deby’s efforts to reduce the disproportionate influence of ethnic Zaghawa within the state and security apparatus.
Impacts
A major USD500mn loan from the United Arab Emirates will bolster Deby’s position ahead of December legislative elections.
Escalating inter-communal tensions pose a growing stability risk, especially in southern and eastern Chad.
The government will struggle to manage the large-scale influx of refugees from fighting in Sudan.
