The current average cost of building a general hospital is £954/m2of gross internal floor area (GIFA), according to a study Surveys of Tender Prices published recently by the Building Cost Information Service.
Figure 4 shows that, although the mean cost of general hospitals is £954/m2GIFA, the cost can vary between approximately £370-£2,250/m2GIFA based on 3rd quarter 1999 tender prices. The £/m2 GIFA prices provide a means of preparing quick preliminary estimates of the cost of a proposed building for the client. They can subsequently be used as a benchmark for more detailed estimates at a later stage in the design process.
