Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to described the new collaborative working and knowledge‐sharing processes made possible at Fugro through the latest e‐learning publishing systems.

Design/methodology/approach

Draws on information provided by the company's chief surveyor, Offshore Survey Division.

Findings

Describes Fugro's requirement to deploy an advanced e‐learning infrastructure capable of meeting the training needs of a highly dispersed work community, often deployed in parts of the word where online access is slow or even non‐existent.

Practical implications

Underlines how the successful introduction of new enterprise‐wide e‐learning techniques will support Fugro's growing international work base.

Originality/value

Explains how the flexible, open approach required for efficient knowledge sharing and course creation need not create conflict with the traditional checks and balances that must exist to ensure quality control in any large enterprise.
