Purpose – to discuss the popularity of online learning for accountants. Design/methodology/approach – talks to individual accountants about the benefits of web-based learning for continuing professional education and reports that providers are offering increasingly interesting, user-friendly programmes with interactive features. Notes the popularity of anti-fraud courses and the fact that although programme development costs are high, costs per user can be low and, unlike a live seminar, there are no hotel or travel costs to be added. Argues that live seminars can still make sense for top executives/directors,i.e. narrow audiences, for certain skills, e.g. selling, management,communications; and where networking is important. Points out that online and live education can be combined, e.g. by starting a programme with online training and moving on to live sessions.
