Purpose – Discusses the key activities that are involved in talent management. Design/methodology/approach – Gives advice on how to recruit and retain talented employees, identifying some of the misunderstandings concerning what effective talent management is. Findings – Argues that focusing on a small number of talented employees is the wrong approach to talent management – the focus would be on building effective teams and on developing the skills of employees across the organization. Questions the idea that talent management should focus exclusively on existing employees, arguing that good talent management will try to recruit suitably-talented employees from other organizations. Lastly, considers how to retain talented employees and points to research that suggests that organizational culture could be central to this.
