Purpose – Considers the likelihood of a major flu pandemic affecting the USA and assesses how well US organizations are prepared to deal with it. Advises on the preparations that they should be making. Design/methodology/approach– Quotes health experts on the likelihood of a flu pandemic and the possible impact it would have on the US population. Questions whether US companies are sufficiently prepared for the ways in which a pandemic would affect their business. Quotes business consultants, health experts and human resource managers from major companies, such as Intel, on the precautions that companies should be taking now and the actions that they should take when a pandemic strikes. Findings – Concludes that a flu pandemic is a serious threat and urges US businesses to prepare themselves for the acute labour shortages that it will cause. Notes research that indicates only 39 percent of companies believe that they can do anything to prepare for a pandemic and counters this by explaining what preparations they should make. Originality/value– Offers advice to US organizations on how to handle the crisis caused by a flu pandemic.ISSN: 1047-3149Reference: 35AP309
