Making sense of staff training (Sense – the UK charity for deaf-blind people)

Purpose – Interviews Alison Bennett about her role as head of staff training at Sense, the UK charity for deaf-blind people. Design/methodology/approach– Discusses how training is developed that will meet the needs of deaf-blind staff as well as hearing and sighted staff; how training materials are adapted to particular learning preferences; the particular challenges of managing training in the charity sector where resources can be constrained; the organization’s work with other, related voluntary organizations to develop joint training courses; and the development of a National Vocational Qualification for staff working in homes run for deaf-blind people. Findings– Argues that working as a trainer in the charitable sector is challenging because of the poor funding but is also very rewarding.
