Purpose – Describes the approach to human resource management at O2,the UK mobile phone operator. Design/methodology/approach – Interviews Dominic Mahony, HR director at O2, about how the company has turned its employee relations. Discusses the firm’s relationship with the trade unions, its pay-for-performance scheme, the £1,000 bonus paid to all employees, and the priority placed on being seen as a fair employer. Also discusses the role that human resources plays in achieving the company’s business goals. Findings– Reports that O2’s human resource strategy has resulted in the firm being ranked as the fifth best company to work for in the Sunday Times/best companies poll.
