Purpose – Describes how four organizations recognized that their training programmes were not working effectively and turned them around. Design/methodology/approach – Describes each of the four training programmes in turn – the English as a Second Language training provided by Princess Cruises for its staff; the training designed to enable staff to switch to electronic documentation developed by Saratoga Hospital; the training offered to new sales employees by First Data Corporation; and the manager training at Healthways, Inc. Draws out advice on how to achieve a training turnaround. Findings – Argues that organizations should not put up with substandard training programmes, underlining that careful analysis and the assessment of training needs and objectives can be key to successful training.
