Purpose – Highlights the lack of diversity at senior levels within many UK firms despite their commitment to diversity and discusses why this is. Design/methodology/approach – Looks at the disadvantages that people from black and minority ethnic communities face because of recruitment methods commonly used by firms, such as psychometric testing. Describes how to set up systems, which enable these disadvantages to be overcome. Also discusses the potential for unconscious prejudice or beliefs to exclude some groups of employees, citing the example of women with children. Profiles a successful initiative at Barclays Bank designed to recruit, develop and promote disabled employees. Findings – Stresses the business case for achieving a diverse workforce at all levels within the organization and underlines that this is achievable if hidden barriers are removed.
