Presents a round table discussion with senior UK human resource managers and recruiters about the prospects for recruitment in 2009, the performance of human resource managers during the recession and the changes that occurring within human resource departments. Notes that firms seem to be focusing on training and learning, talent management and retention with the result that human resource management budgets do not seem to have been targeted in this recession. Questions whether the Ulrich model of human resource management, which argues for human resource management to be split into centres of excellence that are staffed by specialist, business partners and shared service centres, works in practice. However, stresses the advantages of filling some human resource management posts with people from line management. For the future, argues that human resource managers should widen talent management strategies to a wider group of people and get better at using human resource metrics.
