The tachistoscope is any projector with an aperture timing device to give a regulated exposure of an image. Its use in training is to improve perception by widening the field of view and to improve recognition of what is viewed and retention of the subject matter. The procedure can be referred to as flash training and is practised by projecting suitable images (eg shapes, symbols, numbers, words or phrases) on to a screen and gradually decreasing exposure times.
