Examines the key variables which need to be understood and managed to achieve optimum growth out of change. Specifically, considers how to alter the dimension of each variable. Variables considered are the environment, continuity, size, phasing, frequency, duration, the initiator, the development level, perceptions, expectation, and the causal variable – impact. Also examines the dilemma of change. Considers the organizational responses to uncertainty produced by change and contrasts them with responses to the unpredictability of the outcomes of change. Examines the conflict between approaches which produce inflexible means to a defined end, removing discomfort and providing control, and those producing flexible means to an unclear end, recognizing that the future cannot be predicted. Summarizes the key points.
