In the 18 month period between July 1971 and December 1972, ICI Plastics Division, faced with steeply rising costs and shrinking profit margins, like a number of other British companies had to reduce staff numbers. Although efforts were made to handle this through reduced recruitment and natural wastage a considerable number of white collar staff in the end became redundant or retired early from the company. It was a difficult period for both management and staff, and the Division did a great deal to help those affected find new jobs. A special job‐hunting service was created, and much counselling help was given by managers and personnel officers — both with the practical problems of finding a new job and with the emotional problems of being made redundant, often after long service with the Division.
