PETT is the new acronym for what has formerly been known to those involved as the Interdepartmental Committee for Publicity on Engineering and Technology. This committee, initiated by what was then the Ministry of Technology and is now the Department of Industry includes representatives from the appropriate Government departments, from educational organisations, professional bodies, voluntary associations, and industry—all concerned with some aspect of the problem of encouraging more young people to consider a technological or engineering career by promoting a wider understanding of the role of professional engineers and technologists in our society. This is particularly important in our current economic situation which coincides with (and some might say partly results from) the emphasis our educational system places on the academic pursuit of science and a lack of sympathy with the direction of talented (and other) students into industry. The three films reviewed below are recent productions in a series which PETT has sponsored over the years. They are obtainable on free loan from the Central Film Library, Government Building, Bromyard Avenue, Acton, London W3 7JB.
