BP is using World Wide Web technologies on its own intranet as part of its drive to give financial training to its employees. One aspect of this is the completion of an Intranet Learning Centre project by ThomsonConsulting, the technology arm of the Thomson Corporation.

The petroleum giant is offering staff a flexible and personal approach to training, but one which contains the same content across all BP sites around the world.

The BP Intranet Learning Centre does not impose specific courses, times or venues, which can interfere with employee schedules. Each user can decide when to undertake the training from any computer.

The training is aimed at non-finance department staff. Trainees can progress at their own pace and do not have to follow the speed of a traditional classroom environment.

The site is designed to offer a wide range of levels and modules, Q&As,self- assessment and test pages. There is also an e-mail help facility for additional questions.

"Traditional training can be intrusive, but this initiative gives us the option to offer financial training to employees who need it, when and wherever they want it", said Simon Woolley, manager of the financial skills team at BP finance.
